Why Is Low Fuel Called Bingo?

There are many possible explanations as to why low fuel is called “bingo.” One theory suggests that it derived from the sound of a ball bouncing off of a wooden board. When a plane’s fuel is low, it makes a “bing” noise. Another theory suggests that bingo may have come from the British term for “toasted bread,” which was bingo.

When RAF pilots were running out of fuel in World War II, they would toast pieces of bread and call it bingo. Either way, the term has stuck and is now commonly used to describe a situation in which a plane is running low on fuel.
