Bingo is derived from the English word “bingo” meaning “a game of chance in which a player bets by marking off numbers on a board as they are called by the referee.” Bingo was first played in Britain in the early 19th century and quickly spread to other parts of the world.
The modern version of bingo was created in 1938 by Englishman Edward Dewar, and it became wildly popular in the United States during World War II. The popularity of bingo has continued to grow over the years, and it is now played in more than 200 countries.
