Salsberry created a game called “matrimonial bingo” which involved giving out small prizes to players as they rang bells on a board. The game quickly grew in popularity, and Salsberry eventually renamed his game “bingo.”.
Bingo became popular in the United States due to its simplicity and its ability to attract a wide range of people. Bingo is usually played by groUPS of people in a room with a board covered in squares.
Players attempt to fill up their squares by guessing numbers from 1-51 (or 1-100 if playing American-style bingo). If a player guesses the number corresponding to the square on the board, they receive a prize.
