Bingo is a game of chance where players try to match a series of numbers on a card or board. In California, bingo is considered gambling and is subject to the same lAWS and regulations as other forms of gambling.
There is no statewide law regulating bingo, but each county has its own ordinance governing the game. In Los Angeles County, for example, bingo is not allowed in churches or schools, and must be conducted in private premises that have been licensed by the county.
Players in California can only win cash prizes if they are playing at a licensed bingo hall. Non-cash prizes, such as gift certificates or free games, are not allowed.
In 2006, the California State Legislature passed Assembly Bill 2608, which modified the state’s gambling lAWS to include bingo. Prior to this amendment, bingo was considered a form of “social gambling” and was not subject to the same regulations as other forms of gambling.
The amendment makes it illegal for any person to operate or participate in any form of social gaming that includes bingo unless that gaming activity is conducted at a licensed club or facility operated by an authorized political party or commercial casino.
